Siru Keerai Thandu Soup

Siru Keerai is also known as Amaranthus tropical in English. It is a very healthy greens variety that is very popular in South India. Usually when we buy siru keerai, we use the leaves alone and discard the stems but we can make a tasty soup out of these stems.

This soup is very good for those with kidney problems and for those with diabetics. It also helps in digestion. If your kids won't eat greens, then you can make such soups and give them and they will get all the benefits of the keerai through this soup.

This is a simple method to make this soup, you can also make this soup more tasty by adding onions, tomatoes and some garlic.

Keerai Sadam is a healthy one pot dish that I make to pack for lunch boxes. I recently made this keerai sadam with kuthiraivali and it tasted just as good but with double the health benefits. You can make the same with other millets like samai, varagu or thinai.
This keerai sadam is without dal and is made like a biryani, you can also make keerai sadam with dal, I will post that recipe later. I have made this rice with siru keerai, you can make it with any greens variety.

Keerai Thandu Poriyal

Keerai thandu poriyal is a stirfry made with only the stems of the keerai. I make a lot of keerai poriyal and my kids don't like eating the stems of the greens. So my maid suggested this recipe where you can cook the stems separately and make a poriyal out of it. The stems are already so tender so it cooks pretty well. I put it in the pressure cooker to make sure it was well cooked so that my kids will not fuss about it!

I normally make keerai sambar as it's healthy and tasty, this time I added some poosanikai (white pumpkin) along with the keerai and the sambar turned out even more tasty! This has become one of our favorites and I make this combination quite often! I have used siru keerai, you can use any variety of keerai.

Siru Keerai Poriyal

Keerai is a staple in South Indian homes. Including any variety of keerai at least 3 days a week is very good for health. Siru Keerai is rich in iron, vitamins and fibre.
You can make a masiyal or a poriyal with siru keerai. I usually make a masiyal with siru keerai or arai keerai but this time I decided to make a poriyal.
I make the poriyal slightly different and this makes it really tasty. Instead of using just grated coconut, I add some garlic and green chillies and then add it in which gives the keerai a unique taste.

Mudakathan Keerai Dosai

Few months back I suddenly suffered from severe knee pain. It was probably because of climbing all those stairs with the heavy school bags of my kids! Whatever the reason, I was struggling quite a lot with it and my maid suggested this recipe. I did some research on it and found out that this keerai has some anti inflammatory properties and it's quite rich in anti oxidants too. It is hailed as a natural joint pain reliever! In English it is called as Balloon Vine leaves.

Mudakathan Keerai Dosai

So I decided to give it a go. And to my pleasant surprise, my knee pain has disappeared without any conventional medicine or treatment. From then on, I make it a point to include this keerai in our diet regularly.

This recipe is easy and simple to make and the best part is, I can give my kids too and they are quite excited to see the green dosa and eat it without a fuss!! There are 2 ways to make this dosa. You can add the cleaned leaves while grinding the idli dosa batter or you can make it like how I have done below. I find this method more simpler.

Keerai Poriyal | Greens Stirfry

Keerai Poriyal

Keerai (or greens) is one of the most healthy green leafy vegetable full of iron and vitamins. It is essential to include keerai in our daily meals. As a child, I never used to eat greens but as I grew older I changed!

I remember, when I was little, my father's friend a naturopath, had come home and as he was giving us a diet chart, he asked my mum to include keerai 4 days a week! At that time, it was too much for me since I hated keerai! Now we regularly make keerai atleast 3-4 days a week, when it's available.

You can make a keerai masiyal or make a poriyal with this vegetable. You can follow the same procedure for any of the keerai variety you find.

Murungai Keerai Poriyal / Drumstick leaves Stir Fry

Drumstick leaves are so rich in iron and calcium that it is very healthy to have it often. It also tastes good too. This is my mum's favorite and since we have a drumstick tree in our house, this is made very often. Removing the leaves from the stalk is quite a tiresome job but to make it easy, roll the drumstick leaves in a newspaper and leave it in the fridge overnight. You will find that the leaves shed by themselves and beyond that it is easy to clean.
