Manathakkali keerai also called as black night shade in English is a wonderful greens variety with lots of medicinal values. This is a very common dish made in South India and it's cooked with dal (lentils) and sometimes with coconut too. This is a very delicious recipe and can be had with rice or with roti.
MANATHAKKALI KEERAI KOOTU
Preparation time 10 mins | Cooking time 15 mins | Serves 3
Ingredients
Method
1. Soak the dal for 30 minutes, wash the keerai and set aside. Chop the onion.
2. In a pressure cooker add the keerai, tomatoes, garlic, tur dal, chillies. Add enough water and pressure cook for 2 whistles.
3. Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and mash everything well together.
4. In a kadai, add oil. Once the oil heats up, add the mustard seeds and urad dal.
5. When the mustard seeds splutter, add the chopped onions. Saute until the onions turn translucent.
6. Now add the mashed manathakkali keerai and dal. Mix well.
7. Add the salt and turmeric powder and mix well. Cook for 5 minutes and switch off.
Notes
1. You can add some coconut paste also to this dish.
2. If your not soaking the dal then you will have to pressure cook for longer as the dal will take time to cook.
3. You can add some chopped ginger too.
4. You can add a little less dal too but adding 1/2 cup will make the dish very tasty.
5. Instead of tur dal, you can dry roast moong dal and use that too.
