Prawn Masala Recipe

This is a killer recipe! My mom's speciality. This prawn masala tastes awesome and disappears quickly once it's made! This is a spicy masala so you need to adjust the spice level according to your preference. This can be made as a thick gravy or semi dry or dry masala. We always make the semi dry version.

My mom makes a paste of onion, pepper, ginger, garlic and tomato and adds this paste which gives the unique taste. We also add potatoes to the prawns, this is purely optional.

Ingredients
  • Prawns - 1/4kg
  • Onion  - 1 medium
  • Tomato - 2 medium
  • Pepper corns- 1 tbsp
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece
  • Garlic - about 15 pods
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Tamarind water - 1 tsp (optional)
  • Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Potatoes - 1 medium size, chopped into small pieces (optional)
  • Salt - to taste

Method
1. Clean the prawns and wash them well. Grind the onion, tomato, ginger, garlic, pepper together.

2. In a pan, add oil. Once the oil is hot, add the cumin seeds and wait for it to splutter. Add the curry leaves.
3. Add the ground paste slowly (it will splutter) and stir well.

4. Add the coriander powder and red chilli powder. Mix well. Add very little tamarind juice. About 1 tsp only. Saute well until the oil separates. The masala will turn a deep shade.
5. Add the prawns and mix well. Saute for 3-4 mins. Then add the potatoes.

6 Add about 1/2 cup of water and allow the prawns and potatoes to cook.
7. You can pressure cook the potatoes before adding to the masala.
8. Once the prawns are cooked, it will shrink and roll into small balls.

9. Turn off the stove according to the gravy that you want. If you want it very dry then let the prawns cook well until all the water is gone.
10. Garnish and serve.

Goes well with rice, rotis and dosas

Notes
1. You can even add coconut milk but that gives a different taste to the dish.
2. If your adding raw potatoes then add more water to allow the potatoes to cook well.
3. Adjust spice level to taste.

Until next time,
