Brown Rice Pongal | Healthy Pongal Recipes

Cooking brown rice is not an easy task! It definitely takes some getting used to! The problem with brown rice is that, each brand of brown rice needs to be cooked differently. Whatever I read online on how to cook brown rice did not work. I felt really frustrated cooking it and decided to cook something easy with the brown rice. And thus came about this brown rice pongal. Pongal is a very forgiving dish, you can get away with some extra water too! So I made a lot of pongal and brown rice curd rice and bisibellabath until I figured out how to cook brown rice! This is definitely a healthy option and much more filling too.

Also check out the ven pongal, oats pongal, thinai pongal, kuthiraivali pongal and sakkarai pongal recipes.

Kuthiraivali Pongal | Millet Recipes

My kids love eating ven pongal simply because it's easy to eat and they can finish it off quickly! Since they prefer pongal, I like to introduce millets to them in the form of pongal. I have made pongal with all the millets and they have not found out the difference at all! They love the millet pongal just as much as they love the regular ven pongal!
I have also posted thinai pongal recipe. This post is pongal made with kuthiraivali or barnyard millet.

Thinnai Pongal | Foxtail Millet Pongal

Thinnai has become my husband's favorite, actually all millets are his favorite and he wants us to include millets in our daily or atleast weekly meals. I tried this pongal with foxtail millet and I should say all my skepticism vanished! This pongal tasted absolutely delicious and it tastes just like the normal ven pongal or the oats pongal that we are so used to! This makes a delicious and healthy breakfast dish.
We add a bit more moong dal in our pongal recipes and that makes the pongal really yum. Also I add pepper powder instead of whole peppers since no one eats whole peppers!
Do try this out and switch to a more healthy lifestyle.

Oats Pongal Recipe

My husband and me love oats and like to include it in our daily meal. We usually make it as a porridge, which is easy and simple to make but I decided to make it more flavorful and try out some breakfast recipes with it. I have tried oats idli and loved it and decided to make some oats pongal this time.

This turned out, extremely flavorful and yum! You can't tell that this was made with oats! It tasted just as good as the regular ven pongal except this has to be eaten hot and served immediately.
Check out the other pongal recipes.

Sakkarai Pongal Recipe / Sweet Pongal Recipe

I'm back from my vacation but my thoughts are still lingering around my Perima's house. Not just me but my daughter also keeps reliving the things that she saw and enjoyed there. They had peacocks walking around in their garden and my daughter who is only used to seeing crows in our neighborhood, seems to have enjoyed seeing those peacocks and pea hens! Fortunately I took lots and lots of photos and videos, so my kids are enjoying seeing the zoo animals and the metro ride and the toy train rides etc!

The food we had each day was fit for a king! I'm sure I have put on 2 kgs but who cares!! Vacations and family are meant for careless enjoyment! This recipe was made by my dear cousins wife, she is an amazing person! She is such a lively, charming person - there is never a dull moment around her! She is the perfect fit for their family.

How to make Ven Pongal

Ven Pongal is one of the traditional South Indian dishes and one of my favorite! We always have pongal with sambar and not with chutney. Although many families are used to eating with chutney, we always make pongal and mulangi sambar. It tastes absolutely heavenly! It is also very easy to make. And since kids love to eat this too, it is one of the regular dishes in our home.
Traditionally pongal is made using ghee - lots of ghee! The more ghee you add the better it tastes. But in our house we make it only with oil. You can add ghee if you don't have any restrictions. If the pongal looks a bit runny when you open the cooker, not to worry. It will come down to a soft consistency.
I have also started to make pongal with millets and we love it! Check out the kuthiraivali pongal and thinai pongal . Also check out the brown rice pongal and oats pongal.
