Baby Potato and Peas Masala | Aloo Matar Recipe

Aloo matar is one of the favorite side dish for roti/paratha and also for rice. We make this often at home and this time, I decided to make this dish with baby potatoes. We are typical south indians so we enjoyed this with a plate of rice and murungakai kuzhambu!!

This is the easiest and simplest version of aloo matar. The whole process gets over quickly, perfect for early morning bustle!

Baby Potato Peas Masala

Ingredients

  • Baby potatoes - Around 15
  • Peas - 1/2 cup
  • Chopped onion - 2 medium
  • Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
  • Garam masala powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Chopped coriander leaves - 2 tbsp
  • Salt - to taste

To Temper

  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Green chilli - 2, chopped

Baby Potato Peas Masala

Method
1. In a pressure cooker, add the peas and baby potatoes with just enough water and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles until it's cooked.
2. In a pan, add oil. Once the oil heats up add the cumin seeds, curry leaves and green chillies.

3. When the cumin seeds splutter, add the onions and some salt. Saute until the onions become translucent.
4. Now add the masalas, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder. Mix well and cook for a few minutes.

5. Add the cooked peas and baby potatoes. If you don't want to pressure cook the baby potatoes and peas, add it directly to the pan, add enough water and cook for about 10 minutes or until the vegetables are cooked.
6. If you have already pressure cooked the veggies, just mix them with the masalas and wait for it to blend well, add chopped coriander leaves and switch off.

Notes
1. I always pressure cook the veggies and then add to the masala since it saves time and gas! You can choose to cook the vegetables in the pan itself.
2. I have not added green chillies since my daughter likes it bland, but I recommend you add the chillies otherwise it will be too bland like baby food!

Until next time,
