Semiya Upma | Vermicelli Upma | Easy Breakfast Recipes

Semiya upma or semiya kichadi is a south indian breakfast dish and is quite famous here as it can be made quickly and is delicious too. It can be made plain or mixed with some vegetables and spices and made into a flavourful dish. This is the simplest version of semiya upma, I will be adding the different versions later. We even make a semiya chicken biryani!

Semiya Upma

You can add any vegetable to this dish. I have added only carrots today but have made it with beans, peas, potatoes along with carrots. It is extremely tasty when made with all the other vegetables. Sometimes it is called vegetable semiya biriyani because of all the vegetables and masalas added.

Semiya Upma

Method
1. Chop the onion and grate the carrot and set aside.
2. If the vermicelli is not pre roasted, dry roast it for 3 mins in a pan. I used roasted vermicelli.

3. In a pan add oil, mustard seeds, wait for it to splutter. Then add urad dal, channa dal, curry leaves, hing and green chillies. Then add the onions and ginger.
4. Once the onions turn golden brown, add the carrots. Saute for 3-4 mins.
5. Add the water, turmeric powder, salt.

6. Once the water starts boiling, add the vermicelli, juice of half a lemon. Close the lid and allow to cook stirring occasionally.

Goes well with any chutney. We had it with coriander chutney.

Semiya Upma

Notes
1. Dry roast in medium to low flame so that it doesn't get burned.
2. Instead of 1/2 cup of grated carrot, you can reduce the carrots and include other veggies as well.
3. You can roast some cashews and and add it too.

Until next time,
