Aatu Moola Masala | Lamb Brain Masala

I have never had a brain fry in my life!! And I'm not too sure if I will ever have some! This is my first experience with it and my mum says I'm too fussy since I was hesitant to even touch it!! But for the sake of my kids, I decided to brave myself and cook some. We were told that it's very good for kids so we made some for them, who never seem to put on any weight.

I was not sure if my kids will eat it but I was surprised to find that they did not complain at all, of course I never told them it's brain fry and never showed them the brain before it was cooked! Once cooked it looks just like any other dish.

Aatu Moola Masala

For the sake of my blog and to do justice to my readers, I had to force myself to eat some so that I can write a review...and my verdict, it tastes good, much better than what I expected. But it's very soft and slimy and that's something I did not prefer. I would suggest adding lots of spice to the dish, like you would to any non veg dish.

Aatu Moola Masala

Method
1. Wash the brain gently under water and chop it into small pieces. Chop the onion and tomato.
2. In a pan, heat oil. Once the oil heats up, add the cumin seeds and curry leaves.

3. When the cumin seeds splutter, add the onions. Saute till the onions become translucent.
4. Add the tomatoes and some salt. Cook covered for about 3 minutes.

5. Add the ginger garlic paste and saute until the raw smell leaves.
6. Now add the turmeric powder, red chilli powder, pepper powder. Mix well and cook for a couple of minutes. Add 2 tbsp water if needed.

7. Add the brain gently into the masala. Mix slowly and cook for a few minutes. Brain gets cooked very quickly.
8. After about 5 -6 minutes, cut a small piece of brain, the flesh would have turned white, then it means it's cooked.

9. Check for salt, add the chopped coriander leaves and switch off.

Notes
1. Make sure you always buy fresh brain and cook it the same say that you buy. Do not freeze it for later. It gets spoilt easily.
2. Handle the brain with care, it's so soft that it can easily break off into small pieces.
3. Brain get's cooked very fast, do not leave it for long to coo.
4. Add more masala, I did not add since I was making this exclusively for my kids. Make it spicy by adding some green chilli, some garam masala and fennel seeds.

Until next time,
