Method
1. Grease and line a 9x5 inches loaf tin, if you don't have a loaf tin, use any 8 or 9 inches tin. Pre heat the oven to 180 degrees C for 15 mins.
2. Beat the butter and sugar for 2 mins until light and fluffy. Stop the beater in between and scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl.
3. Add the eggs one at a time and it well for another 2 mins then add the vanilla and beat again.
4. To add the dry ingredients, place a sieve over the bowl and add the maida, baking powder and salt. Sieve this into the bowl.
5. Before you mix the wet and the dry ingredients, add the milk and slowly combine the wet and dry ingredients till it's well combined. Do not overmix the batter.
6. Now to make the ombre pattern, take the cake batter that we've prepared and evenly and equally divide it into 3 bowl.
7. To the 1st bowl, add 3 tbsp of cocoa powder, to the second bowl add 1 tbsp of cocoa powder and leave the 3rd bowl free, that will be the vanilla layer.
8. To the 1st bowl where we added 3 tbsp of cocoa powder, add 1 tbsp of powdered sugar. This is because the extra cocoa powder that we added, can make this layer slightly bitter. Also add 1 tbsp of milk to the 1st bowl as we've added extra cocoa.
9. Now start mixing the 1st bowl till you get a smooth chocolate batter. This will be the dark brown layer, the bottom most layer.
10. Then take the 2nd bowl with 1 tbsp of cocoa powder and mix it well till you get a smooth batter. This will be the 2nd layer.
11. The 3rd bowl will be the vanilla layer, the top most white layer of the cake.
12. Now take the cake tin and add the dark brown chocolate batter. Tap the pan to spread the batter.
13. Then take the second bowl of light brown chocolate batter and add it in the cake tin. Spread it with a spoon.
14. Finally add the vanilla batter in the cake tin and spread it with a spoon.
15. Tap the cake tin lightly and bake in the pre heated oven for 60 mins. Start checking by 50 mins, put a skewer inside the cake, if it comes out clean then you can remove it from the oven.
16. Let the cake cool for 20 mins and then remove from the tin.

Notes
1. Add the 2nd and 3rd layer of batter gently as we don't want the layers to mix. You can even put the batter in a piping bag and pipe it into the cake tin.
