Karuppu Ulundu Vadai | Black Urad Dal Vadai

Black urad dal is protein rich and extremely good for growing adolescent girls and pregnant women. It helps strengthen the bone and joints. In our family, we give young girls a lot of dishes made with black urad dal to strengthen their back bone during the adolescence stage. 
So if you have young girls, above the age of nine, you can make this vada every week and include in their diet. This tastes a little different from the plain white urad dal vada but this is a lot more healthy.



Ingredients
  • Black Urad Dal - 1/2 cup
  • Rice flour - 2 tbsp
  • Ginger - 1 small piece
  • Green chillies - 2
  • Cumin seeds - 2 tsp
  • Onion - 1
  • Coriander leaves - handful
  • Salt - 1/2 tsp

Method
1. Soak the black urad dal for 6-8 hours.
2. Transfer to a mixee jar, add ginger, green chilles, cumin seeds and salt.
3. Do not add too much water, the batter should be thick, sprinkle some water and grind the batter till its's smooth.
4. Transfer into a bowl. Add rice flour, chopped onion and coriander and mix well.
5. Heat oil to fry the vadai. Make small vadai so that it will cook well in the inside too.
6. Fry both sides, till it's golden brown and then remove.

Notes
1. Soak for a long time, only then it will grind easily as it's black urad dal.
2. Since I made this for small children, I chose to grind the green chillies. If making for adults, you can chop the chillies and add in batter.
3. Instead of vadai, you can make small pakodas too.
