Dal Fry

This is one of the simplest and easiest dishes that you can prepare and it tastes absolutely yum! This is such a comfort food for all Indians, can't imagine life without dal fry or dal tadka. When I'm too bored to cooked or not well, it's always dal fry! This is such a flavorful dish and healthy too.

Ingredients
  • Toor dal - 3/4th cup
  • Water - 2 cups (to pressure cook the dal)
  • Garlic pods - 5
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  • Onion - 1
  • Tomato - 1
  • Green chilli - 1
  • Salt - to taste
To Temper
  • Oil - 1 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal - 1/4 tsp
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Asafoetida - a pinch

Method
1. Wash the toor dal and pressure cook it with 2 cups of water along with 6 pods of garlic, 1 tsp of oil and 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder.
2. Pressure cook for about 6-7 whistles until the dal is well cooked.

3. Once the pressure releases, open the pressure cooker and mash the dal well. Set aside.
4. In a pan, add oil. Add the mustard seeds, urad dal, cumin seeds, curry leaves and asafoetida.

5. Once the seeds splutter, add the onions and green chillie. Saute until the onions become translucent.
6. Add the tomatoes and salt. Mix well and let it cook for 3 minutes. Add little water if needed. I did not add.

7. Add the garam masala and coriander powder. Mix well.
8. Now add the mashed dal. Add 1/2 cup of water and mix well. Let it cook and boil for 5 minutes.

9. Add chopped coriander leaves and switch off.

Notes.
1. Adjust water according to the consistency of the dal you want. If you prefer a thick dal, add less than the 1/2 cup that I have added.
2. Dal also thickens with time so adjust the water accordingly.
3. You can skip the coriander powder and garam masala powder and make the dal with only turmeric powder.

Until next time,
