Pudalangai Kootu | Snake Gourd Kootu

Pudalangai called as Snake Gourd in English is wonderful healthy which tastes absolutely delicious when cooked. I simply love this kootu cooked with dal. Tastes great with any rice variety or even with roti.
The way we make this kootu in our house is extremely simple and easy especially during the early morning bustle and we don't add coconut to this dish, tastes too good!

Pudalangai Kootu

Preparation time 15 mins | Cooking time 20 mins | Serves 3-4

  • Pudalangai - 3
  • Toor dal - 1/2 cup
  • Onion - 2
  • Green chilli - 2 or 3
  • Curry leaves - 2 sprigs
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Cumin powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Salt - to taste
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal - 1/4 tsp
Pudalangai Kootu

1. Wash and soak the toor dal for 30 minutes.
2. Clean the pudanlangai thoroughly. Scrap the outer portion and the inner white portion completely. Then cut the pudalangai into small pieces.

3. In a pressure cooker, add the toor dal, turmeric powder, one sprig of curry leaves, one onion chopped, green chilli and the chopped pudalangai.

4. Add enough water and pressure cook for 2-3 whistles ans switch off.
5. Heat oil in a pan, add the mustard seeds and urad dal.

6. When the mustard seeds splutter, add the other chopped onion and the remaining curry leaves. Saute till the onions become translucent.

7. Now add the cooked pudalngai + toor dal and mix well.  If needed add little water.
8. Add the salt and cumin powder and let it cook for a couple of minutes and switch off.

Pudalangai Kootu

1. If you've soaked the toor dal longer then you can pressure cook just for 1 whistle. The pudalangai cooks very fast is a pressure cooker while the dal takes longer time.
2. Make sure you clean the insides of the pudalangai very well.
3. You can use moong dal too instead of toor dal.

Until next time,
