I have a huge collection of mango recipes in my site, I think on last count it was around 29 mango recipes! But I have never posted a mangai (raw mango) recipe and this is my first!
Mangai Thokku or Raw Mango Pickle is a favorite in our house, you can have it with any dish, be it rice or roti or dosai or even bread sometimes!! Tastes awesome! The taste of the raw mango with the spices and oil is really good! My all time favorite is curd rice and this mangai thokku!

MANGAI THOKKU
Preparation time 20 mins | Cooking time 10 mins | Makes about 1 cup of thokku
Ingredients
- Mangai - 2 large
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 tbsp
- Fenugreek seeds - 1 tsp
- Hing - 1/4 tsp
- Red chilli - 2 (optional)
- Red chilli powder - 1 tbsp
- Oil - 1/4 cup
- Salt - to taste
Method
1. Dry roast the mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, hing and red chillies. Once it cools down, grind it to a powder.
3. In a pan, add the oil. Once the oil heats up, add the grated mangai.
4. Add salt and saute until the Mangai shrinks a little.
4. Add salt and saute until the Mangai shrinks a little.
Notes
1. While storing the pickle use a clean dry spoon to avoid the pickle getting spoilt.
2. Use a wooden ladle while cooking.
3. You can store it in refrigerator for a month or two.
4. If you feel this is too spicy, skip the red chillies.
5. While dry roasting the mustard and fenugreek seeds, don't let it brown too much otherwise it will get burnt and taste bitter.
Until next time,

ReplyDeleteThis is my favourite among pickles.
ReplyDeletelove the simple yet tasty looking pickle. I am not sure if my family would love the grated skin of the mango. Can I peel it and make it?
ReplyDeleteYes you can! Since we are cooking the raw mango for a long time, you will not be able to taste the skin, it will be completely cooked. But yes, you can peel if you want to :)
Deletethank you Beulah.
