Honeycomb Frosting | Honeycomb Cake

I want to share a simple frosting technique for a celebration cake that I make often, which will look lovely on the finished cake. This is so easy to do and at the end you have a beautifully frosted cake! I do this quite often when I run out of time to do something elaborate. Plus, it hides all my flaws in frosting, so I love this trick!!

Honeycomb Cake

I first came across this method some years ago at Alexandra's Recipes and I immediately wanted to try this frosting. Now it's become very famous and you can find it all over the internet.
There are two ways to make this honeycomb frosting and I follow the method given by Alexandra and it's easy and simple. There is another way to do this (which I've mentioned in the notes), I find that to be a little complicated so this is how I do my honeycomb frosting.

HONEYCOMB FROSTING
Preparation time 15 mins

Things you will need
  • Bubble wrap
  • Ganache
  • Cake
  • Pastry brush
  • Oil
  • Scissors

Honeycomb Frosting

Method
1. Bake the cake and let it cool completely.
2. When the cake is cooling, take the bubble wrap and cut a round template for the top of the cake and a long strip that will go around the side of the cake.

3. Brush a thin layer of oil on the bubble wrap.
4. Slice the cake and fill the cake with ganache. Then frost the cake with ganache. Spread the ganache on top of the cake and on the sides of the cake.

5. Now press the bubble wrap on top of the cake and along the sides of the cake. This needs to be done before the ganache sets.

6. Leave the cake in the refrigerator for a 30 mins or until the ganache sets well.

7. Bring the cake from the refrigerator and remove the bubble wrap gently.
I piped some flowers around the sides of the cake to make it look more pretty!

For the ganache
The consistency of the ganache should be right for this method to work. Go through this post on How to make Ganache to know more on how to make the perfect ganache.
  1. For this method, I used 1:2 ratio (1 part cream and 2 parts chocolate). Make the ganache and let it sit at room temperature for a few hours.
  2. Keep checking often to see if the ganache has reached spreadable consistency.
  3. When the consistency is right, start frosting the cake.

Notes
1. You can use any frosting other than ganache too.
2. The other way to do this is - keep the cake plain (without any ganache or any other frosting). Melt some dark chocolate and pour over the bubble wrap and wait for it to half set. Then immediately invert the bubble wrap over the cake and press well and let the chocolate set fully. Remove the bubble wrap gently. I have never made this method.

Until next time,
