I am not a beef eater, never been all my life! And then I visited my anni's house and she cooked beef for us! I could not say no and create a fuss, so I quietly said a prayer and ate it!! And I was quite surprised by it, as it tasted quite similar to mutton and we enjoyed a lovely beef curry.
She then sent some beef with me to try at my home and so I made this beef biryani and a beef curry with it. This biryani turned out quite well. I made a simple biryani in pressure cooker.
I have been taught that, beef that is not cooked thoroughly and properly will lead to worm infestation which is what caused the mind block about beef, so I ended up cooking the beef for a long time. I cooked for 30 minutes in medium flame which gave us a soft cooked meat.
BEEF BIRYANI
Preparation time 20 mins | Cooking time 50 mins | Serves 2-3

2. Blend together the tomatoes and green chillies and set aside.
3. In a pressure cooker, heat the oil and add the cinnamon, bay leaf, star anise and fennel seeds.
4. When the fennel seeds splutter, add the sliced onions and saute until it turns translucent.
5. Add the ginger garlic paste and cook till raw smell leaves.
6. Add the tomato puree and cook till oil separates.
7. Add the biryani masala, cumin powder and red chilli powder. Mix well.
8. Add the chopped mint leaves, salt and curd and mix well.
9. Now add the beef pieces and mix well with the masala.
10. Add 1 cup of water and pressure cook in medium flame for about 15 whistles, then switch off.
11. Once done, open the cooker, switch on the stove and add the drained basmati rice and the remaining water.
12. Add the lemon juice and check for salt. Add the chopped coriander leaves.
13. Close the cooker again and cook for 2 whistles.
14. When the pressure settles, open the cooker and fluff up the rice with a fork or back of a spoon.
Notes
1. Make sure you use tender beef pieces. I used boneless beef pieces.
2. I have seen people cook beef for just 5 whistles but I cooked for 15 as that's what I've been taught!

- Water - 2 cups
- Ginger garlic paste - 1 tbsp
- Biryani masala - 1 tsp
- Cumin powder - 3/4 tsp
- Red chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
- Green chilli - 2
- Mint leaves - a handful
- Curd - 2 tbsp
- Lemon juice - 1 tsp
- Salt - to taste
- Coriander leaves - few chpped
- Oil - 3 tbsp
- Cinnamon - 1
- Bay leaf - 2
- Fennel seeds - 1/4 tsp
- Star anise - 1
