Spicy Potato Masala Recipe

Potatoes are a hot favorite, when there are no other veggies in the house, then potatoes comes to the rescue. This is another one of my anni's fabulous recipes. This tasted absolutely fatastic! I have already posted two other potato dishes, a potato fry - which is a dry dish and a potato masala - which is a poori masala. This potato masala is different from the other two, this has onions and tomato and more spices and more flavor! Totally yum!

SPICY POTATO MASALA
Preparation time 10 mins | Cooking time 20 mins | Serves 3

Ingredients
  • Potatoes - 8 to 9
  • Onions - 2 large
  • Tomato - 2 large
  • Ginger garlic paste - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1.5 tsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala powder - 1 tsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Fennel powder - 1 tsp
  • Crushed garlic - 8 to 10
  • Curry leaves - 1 sprig
To Temper
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Urad dal - 1/2 tsp

Method
1. Pressure cook the potatoes until they are soft and well cooked. I left for 5-6 whistles. Make sure it doesn't get mushy.
2. Chop the cooked potatoes into cubes. Chop the onions and tomatoes and set aside.

3. In a pan, heat oil. When the oil heats up, add the mustard seeds, urad dal and cumin seeds.
4. When the seeds splutter, add the onions. Saute in medium flame, until the onions are translucent.

5. Add the ginger garlic paste. (I forgot to take a picture at this stage) Saute until the raw smell leaves.
6. Add the tomatoes well. Add some salt, close the lid and allow the tomatoes to cook well. It should be well cooked and mushy.

7. Now add all the masalas, the red chilli powder, garam masala powder, turmeric powder and coriander powder. Mix well.
8. Add the curry leaves. Mix and add the chopped potatoes. Mix well. Allow it to cook for a few minutes.

9. Crush the garlic and add along with some more curry leaves. This gives an awesome aroma. Mix the garlic in.
10. Lastly add the fennel powder. Mix well. Allow to cook for a couple of minutes.
11. Add the chopped coriander leaves and switch off.

Notes
1. The ginger garlic paste is less since we are adding some crushed garlic.

Until next time,
