Samai Khichdi | Little Millet Khichdi | Easy Millet Recipes

Samai is called as Little Millet in English, it is one of the varieties in the millet family. Here are the other names in other languages (source:internet) Hindi: Kutki; Tamil: Samai; Telugu: Sama; Kannada: Same; Malayalam: Chama.

This is an easy millet recipe that you can make for breakfast or dinner. My husband and me love this khichdi! This khichidi is soft and mushy like any pongal except it has vegetables added to it. Tastes awesome!!

Here are some other millet recipes
Method
1. Wash the samai and soak with moong dal for 30 minutes.
2. In a pressure cooker/pan, add oil. Once the oil heats up, add the mustard seeds, urad dal, cumin seeds, curry leaves, green chillies and hing.

3. When the cumin seeds splutter, add the chopped onions. Add a little salt and saute until the onions become translucent.
4. Add the ginger garlic paste and saute until the raw smell leaves.
5. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes become mushy and well cooked.

5. Then add the turmeric powder and garam masala and mix wel.
6. Add the chopped vegetables, mix in with the masala and cook for 2 more minutes.
6. Drain the soaked samai and add it to the veggies.

7. Add 4 cups of water and check for salt. Add the lemon juice.
8. Add chopped coriander leaves and pressure cook for 2 whistles, simmer after the first whistle. Millets cook fast so keep watch and switch off quickly.

9. Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and mix well.

Serve hot with chutney or sambar.

Notes
1. Add any vegetables of your choice or you can skip the vegetables too. I used only beans and carrot.
2. Serve hot otherwise millets tend to become dry.
3. If you don't want to use garam masala, skip that and use red chilli powder.
4. You can skip the tomato and use onions alone too.
5. I used a 3L cooker for this measure and found it too small! Use a larger pressure cooker.

Until next time,

  5. Delicious! I prefer millets for breakfast and meals instead of white rice.
