Varagu Arisi Moong Dal Khichidi

My periamma taught me to make moong dal khichidi with rice and I thought it would be a great idea to make the same with millets. I gave it a try and it came out very well. Now I make this quite often at home. Whenever I feel lazy to cook, then I make this with a simple side dish and it works very well!

Millet moong dal khichidi

We just love this khichidi, the taste is so heavenly and yet so simple! I do not like to add more masala to this dish other than the turmeric powder, as I feel it takes away from the 'delishiousness' of this dish so I use only turmeric powder and add more green chillies for the spice. You can add some red chilli powder or even garam masala to it.

Millets are considered to be a super food! They are so much more healthy and nutritious than rice and so we try to include it atleast 3 meals in a week. I made this with Varagu Arisi (kodo millet), you can do the same with kuthiraivali, thinai or samai also.

Other millet recipes
1. Wash and soak the varagu arisi and moong dal for 30 minutes. Chop the onions and tomatoes.

2. In a 4 or 5L pressure cooker, heat the oil. Add the cumin seeds and wait for it to splutter.
3. Add the chopped onions and slit green chillies. Saute until the onions are translucent.

4. Add the chopped tomatoes and cook for 3 minutes. Add salt.
5. Add the turmeric powder and mix well with the onion and tomatoes.

6. Add the drained varagu arisi and moong dal. Mix and add the water and check for salt. Add the chopped coriander leaves.

7. Close the cooker and put the weight. Pressure cook for 4 whistles and switch off.
8. Open the cooker after 5 minutes, add some ghee and mix well.

Serve hot with papad or potato chips!

Notes
1. The khichidi will thicken with time so this should be served immediately.
2. I add only turmeric powder as I simply love this simplistic taste. You can add some garam masala and red chilli powder too.
3. Since I have added only turmeric powder, we add more green chilli to make it spicy. You can add 5 green chillies too.
4. Do not wait for the pressure to settle down on it's own. The millets will start to clump up. I usually open 5 minutes after switching off the gas and give a good mix with ghee.

Until next time,
